AngularJS + TypeScript Tip - Controller ViewModel

In my previous post on getting started with AngularJS and TypeScript, I went over some of the gotchas that took me awhile to work through such as minification and scope inheritance. Today I want to look at a tip to help ease the pain you might encounter when trying to use TypeScript with Angular and how to structure your controllers. You’ve Got Me. Who’s Got You? In the current version of AngularJS (1.…

Quiet Down

We can publish the history of Roman Empire in 500 pages, but we'd need ten times that to contain a narrative of the noise in your head over the last hour. Seth Godin …

Four Barrel Coffee - No Soy For You!

Friends. I have seen Hipster Mecca – as long as we don’t count Portland or Williamsburg. It’s the area called the Mission in San Francisco and smack dab in the middle of this skinny jeans kingdom is a caffeine fountain called Four Barrel Coffee. It was a trip I planned out ahead of time. My brother-in-law drove us to the address, but if you didn’t know it was there, you might miss it as there was no sign advertising its presence.…

TypeScript Generics

About a month ago, Microsoft released the 0.9 version of TypeScript. Originally released in October 2012, the language has come a long way and one of its most requested and recent additions is generics. You may find yourself asking, “When the heck am I going to use generics in JavaScript?” I had the same question. The answer is all the time!! Even If You Don’t Care Even if you don’t care about generics yourself, you’ll start to get benefits from the community.…

Creativity Noise

If you, like me, have silently mocked the flocks of “artists” that seem to spend their lives in their local coffee shop, slaving away on their MacBooks, working on their movie scripts or crafting a killer haiku while the speakers blast generic calming music in the background, what you’re about to read might actually convince you to swallow all your witty insults. A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research from research done at my alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, actually proved conclusively that low-to-moderate ambient sound can actually improve our performance on creative tasks.…

Acer Iconia W3 810 Tablet

At the Build 2013 conference, all attendees received as part of their bribe giveaways an Acer Iconia W3 810 tablet. This device has 2 GB of RAM, 64 GB of drive space, runs an x86 Intel Atom processor with a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 in an 8.1” screen. In addition to the device, attendees received an associated Bluetooth keyboard. Please note that I am required by my employer and law to donate this device to a non-profit organization.…

Initial Build 2013 Impressions

The Microsoft //build/ 2013 conference kicked off today with a whimper. The day 1 keynote just finished and I’m here to give you a reaction from an attendee.   The Goodies Let’s start with the goodies. In the ever increasing arms race to provide awesome hand-outs to conference attendees, Microsoft chose a path similar to Google did at their I/O conference. Instead of announcing some brand new hardware like a much anticipated 7” Surface tablet, they handed out existing hardware with new versions of software.…

If I Weren't Afraid

There’s a famous quote around that’s attributed to different people. What would you do if you weren’t afraid? - Lots of People (Possibly Spencer Johnson, Sheryl Sandberg) It succinctly brings up the issue of your comfort zone and the trade-offs or deals you’ve made in your mind. I think we’ve all made trade offs in the macro sense and continually do so on a daily basis. I like when the question is rephrased, “What would you do if money weren’t an issue?…

Do Your Own Thing

Creativity Serum

Remember that scene in True Lies where that creepy guy gives Arnold an injection in order to get the truth about who he works for? That creepy guy looked so surprised when Harry busted out of those handcuffs. I’m pretty well covered when it comes to telling people the truth (“Yeah…that sucks. Sorry. It’s the truth. Except I’m not sorry.”), but what I really want is a creativity serum. I want something that I can just imbibe and suddenly become a Zen master of creativity.…
